So, I like both cars, but we are taking Al Bundy's duster with the smallest motor that mopar bothered to toss a 4bbl on in 1970, 2 steps above a slant six, and sold it through its lowest price brand to thousands of high-school kids against a "bespoke" not even on the options list "L" something something one of 600 4spd 396 BIG BLOCK chevelle that couldn't hold the kid in his 340 in the 8th mile? sounds about right. What's it going to do if we go up 6 more steps in the Mopar ladder to the race hemi?

In my opinion the Hemi would have the advantage. The ports are so large that they would kill bottom end torque. With a 7 inch tire that would help the Hemi car out of the hole. But the Chevy was lighter, and has better aerodynamics. It also has more horsepower evidenced by the top end charge, and much better m.p.h.! Even though the Hemi. car got out on the Chevy by at least 4 or 5 lengths in the last round the Camaro damn near caught him at the line! I have several more reasons the Camaro is superior to the GTX. I'm limited by space and time!!!

I ran high 10s low 11s back in the eary mid 80s. 75 TA with a built 030 over 455, 670 heads 4hole long tube hedman headers. Fairbanks sling shot stall. 256 superhwy gear option. That time is with 256 gears! It was untouchable on the street from a 30 roll. Everything hit right & I could get a front wheel off the ground. This was before full frame kits. I was 19. There were 2 other cars ran 9s on the street. I knew them both & they knew me. They let me have the street. I could beat them on the street but not the track. We all knew why. Gearing. Back then torque ruled the streets. I have a 74 TA now. Same engine different heads. Can't run 13.5 compression on pump premium anymore. So now 96 heads. 😊

Come on people. Everyone knows this was a totally miss match. The Camaro was driven by a 72 year old man who only races once a year. He is also trying to shift a 4 sp and he also has slow reaction times. Put equally qualified drivers in both cars and the Camaro would win every time. You have 430 HP running against, maybe 320. The driver of the Camaro said that Automatics are quicker than a 4 sp. this is only true if the driver of the 4 sp doesn’t know how to drive and how to shift.

I had a GT390 engine from a wrecked Fairlane GT in my ‘62 Ford F100 4x4. That truck was the envy of every other 4 wheeler present wherever I went off-roading. Which I used to do about every weekend.

BS. My 360 hp '70 Chevelle SS m21 4 speed ran 13.2 sec @ 104 mph. It weighed in @ 3640 fully fueled with 200lb driver.

I don’t know what happened but the Boss should have won easily. Had to have been because of a bad driver. The 70 Boss 302 actually put out over 360 Hp, most of them tested in the 370 range. I saw too many of them race and there’s no way that weak 350 should have won.

The Ford won all three races. I don’t know what they were looking at but the Ford won the first race by a lot, it went through the trap first, it actually won the first race by more than any of the other two.

Why does the Fairlane have GT badging instead of GTA? Was it originally a 4 sp but has been changed to a Automatic?

The 66 and 67 are some of Fords better Ideas. I had a 67 Comet GT Cyclone. Light Blue with Dark Blue interior. Beautiful car and very fast.

I owned at least 25 cutlasses when I was younger and my 1st one was a 71 cutlass supreme that I bought from a good friend in highschool and I paid $1000 for it and I got a 411posi rear and a crane cam and it had a B&M shift kit already in it and 455 rocket engine and I installed 202 fully heads in with a 4 barrel Holley carb and I took it to the Atco speedway in NJ and it ran high 12's in the 1/4mile and I was hooked on cuttlass's ever since 😎💪👍, the years that I had were 68 -76 and I loved all of them they were very powerful machines and had a great body style and very reliable 😎❤️👍

The Ford guy obviously tickled his engine better than the chevy guy. Chevies have larger head volume, but Fords are simply a better design. If you have doubts, look at LS heads. The design resembles the SBF head.

I was big into the street racing scene in my small Ozark hometown in the early 1970s. We only raced at an 1/8 of a mile because of safety considerations and the fact that level straight roads more than the were rare. It was well known that if you wanted to win with a pure stock low cost car, you got a 340 Duster. I could never beat one with my mostly stock 1973 Nova SS 350. But as noted, even with our fairly mild Ozark winters, they were rust buckets buckets. Failure to clean the caked mud from a drive down a muddy dirt road would lead to perforations with in a couple of years.

If they still made 392 Shaker's I would buy one.

Sorry, that Duster is not stock. It may fit into the rules of "pure stock" as far as NHRA goes, but no actual stock 1971 Duster 340 would run 12's. (Before you 'Mopar Or No Car' guys start bitching) Don't get me wrong, I actually like the cars. There is just no comparison to these 2 cars as far as HP goes. If they both had traction....

Automatic transmissions back then soaked up a lot of horsepower. One of those two needs to switch to a 4 Speed for the win

I installed a 427 in my 66 Chevelle that has surprised a lot of people. The builder was a master mechanic and engine builder. He built it to run on pump gas but still be extremely fast. It easily beat an LS6 1970 Chevelle SS that caused the owner to sell it to try to build something faster which he never did. He still regrets selling it. My 66 427 was my daily driver for several years. When I tell people about it they usually ask me “Don’t you wish you still had it?” and I tell them. “It’s in my shop!”
